Piers Gough, one of the world’s leading architects and the visionary behind the landmark One Lansdowne skyscraper about to be delivered in Croydon, is to speak at the ninth Develop Croydon Conference on Tuesday, November 21.
Under the heading ‘Meanwhile in Croydon’, this year’s summit, being hosted by BBC broadcaster Lucy Hockings, will discuss the ways in which regeneration is being driven forward as it responds to the capital’s agendas.
Mr Gough, who is passionate that it is “possible to build in a way that improves lives” will speak in a session entitled Building Blocks: Home for All Croydoners alongside Marc Vlessing, co-founder of Pocket Living, and Kieran White, managing director of Vision Modular Systems.
Working for CZGW Architects, Mr Gough has been key in bringing forward the One Lansdowne vision, featuring towers of 68 and 41 storeys linked by an 11-storey podium, for developers Guildhouse Rosepride which recently secured planning consent from Croydon Council.
He said: “The proposed building is a spectacularly tall landmark denoting the centre of Croydon from a distance and its important location in the townscape.
“The higher building’s curved ribbons define a reverse indent up the height of the tower. The relief elements project above the rectilinear form of the towers to create a dramatic silhouette, invoking the heyday of the celebratory skyscraper.”
The scheme designed by Mr Gough will deliver 794 homes of different sizes and tenures, 35,000 sq m or Grade A office space, ground floor retail and restaurant space and a podium level gym, swimming pool and residents’ gardens as well as new pedestrian walks leading to a pocket piazza.
David Hudson, chief executive of Guildhouse Rosepride, says of the scheme said: “Piers Gough is one of the great post-war English architects and, with the highest bar and restaurant in London and a viewing gallery open to the public, this really puts Croydon on the map. You will see it from Piccadilly to Brighton.”
Guildhouse Rosepride are sponsoring the innovative Develop Croydon Conference app which allows delegates to join the debate and find out useful information as well as ask questions of speakers before during and after the conference.
