Crystal Palace and Thornton Heath hot spots for first-time buyers

Crystal Palace is the capital’s hot-spot for first-time buyers in their 20s according to a new survey.

With its alternative vibe and burgeoning café culture, estate agents Bairstow Eves and Countrywide found younger first-time buyers were snapping up one in four homes – at an average purchase price of £330,000.

Thornton Heath is another hot spot for those in their 20s, with 21 per cent of sales to first-time buyers in their 20s at an average of £328,333.

Other hotspots include Battersea, Woodford, Acton and Stratford, but at much steeper average prices.

The top 10 is as follows: 1 Crystal Palace 25 per cent £330,000 2 Sidcup 24% £256,917, 3 Woodford 23% £372,156, 4 Thornton Heath 21% £328,333, 5 Battersea 19% £404,000, 6 Greenford 18% £317,990, 7 Romford 17% £308,773, 8 Acton 17% £410,000, 9 Stratford 16% £406,661, 10 Peckham 15% £338,500. All first time buyers in their 20s 9% £316,032.

“Sales to first-time buyers in the capital are on the up,” says David Fell, research analyst at Countrywide and author of today’s report.

“This year they make up the highest proportion of buyers since 2001.”
